DUTY: Between Realities

Duty_edited.jpg

Duty is a reflection on Queen Elizabeth II as a woman, an icon and a symbol of unwavering strength and integrity. Having devoted her life to the Crown, she carried an immense sense of duty while also being a mother, wife and individual living a life largely beyond the public gaze. I wanted to explore the tension between these two identities and the sacrifices that may have been required to maintain that balance. The abstract layers represent the complexity of the life she carried beneath the composed public image, while fragments of famous quotations from the Queen are concealed beneath the paint, suggesting the parts of her voice and personality that existed beneath the surface. Running alongside the work is her powerful statement, "I have to be seen to be believed" - a fitting reflection of a woman whose very presence became synonymous with duty, strength and the Crown.
